IV. Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it: 10X1: 10 Lakshmi Swaminathan was born in Malabar on 24 October 1914. Her father S. Swaminathan, was a lawyer practiced criminal law at Madras High Court, and her mother A.V. Ammakutty was a social worker and independence activist. Lakshmi chose to study medicine and received an MBBS degree from Madras Medical College in 1938. She worked as a doctor in the Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital located at Triplicane, Chennai. In 1940, she went to Singapore and it was there she met some members of Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army. She established a clinic for the poor in Singapore. Most of her patients were migrant labourers from India. It was during this period that she began to play an active role in the Indian Independence League. In 1942, during the surrender of Singapore by the British, Lakshmi aided wounded prisoners of war. Several nationalist Indians were working in Singapore. K.P. Kesava Menon, S.C. Guha and N. Raghavan, were in Singapore and together they formed a council of action. Subhas Chandra Bose arrived in Singapore on 2nd July 1943 and spoke of his determination to start a women’s regiment which would fight for Indian Independence, in his speech. Lakshmi met Subhas Chandra Bose and with his encouragement set up a women’s regiment. She named it Rani of Jhansi Regiment. Women responded enthusiastically to join the all India Women Brigade and Dr. Lakshmi Swaminathan became Captain Lakshmi to them, and form then she was identified as Captain Lakshmi. In 1947 she married Prem Kumar Sahgal in Lahore. They settled in Kanpur and Captain Lakshmi Sahgal continued her medical practice and treated refugees who were arriving in large numbers following the Partition of India. She helped them to overcome their insecurity and helplessness. Lakshmi Sahgal represented the Rajya Sabha and during the Bangaladesh crisis in 1971 she organized relief camps and medical aid for refugees. She was one of the founding members of All India Democratic women’s Association and led many activities and campaigns. She led a medical team to Bhopal during the gas tragedy in 1984. She was once nominated as a candidate in the presidential elections. In 1998, Captain Lakshmi Sahgal was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by Indian President K.R. Narayanan. She is popularly known as Captain Lakshmi, a reference to her rank when she was taken prisoner in Burma during the Second World War. She was seeing patients regularly at her clinic in Kanpur even at the age of 92. She died of cardiac arrest in 2012 and as per her ‘Will’ her body was donated to Kanpur Medical College for medical research.
