Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it. 10x1=10 On MayI2, 1946, Louis Alexander Slotin was carrying out an experiment in the laboratories of Los Alamos with seven other men. Slotin was good with his hands; he liked using his head; he was bright and a little daring — in short, he was like any other man anywhere who is happy in his work. At Los Alamos, Slotin, then aged thirty-five, was concerned with the assembly of pieces of plutonium, each of which alone is too small to be dangerous, and which will only sustain a chain reaction when they are put together. Atomic bombs, are, in fact, detonated in this way, by suddenly bringing together several harmless pieces of plutonium so that they form a larger explosive mass. Slotin himself had tested the assembly of the first experimental bomb which had been exploded in New Mexico in July, 1945. Now, nearly a year later, Slotin was again doing an experiment of this kind. He was nudging toward one another, by tiny movements, several pieces of plutonium, in order to ensure that the total mass would be large enough to make a chain reaction; and he was doing it as experts are tempted to do such things, with a screwdriver. The screwdriver slipped, the plutonium came a fraction too close together, and suddenly the instruments which everyone was watching registered a great upsurge of neutrons, which is the sign that a chain reaction has begun. The assembly was filling the room with radioactivity. Slotin moved at once; he pulled the pieces of plutonium apart with his bare hands. This was virtually an act of suicide, for it exposed him to the largest dose of radioactivity. Then he calmly asked his seven co-workers to mark their precise positions at the time of the accident, in order that the degree of exposure of each one to the radioactivity could be fixed. Having done this and alerted the medical service, Slotin apologized to his companions and said what turned out to be exactly true: that he thought that he would die and they would recover. Slotin had saved the lives of the seven men working with him by cutting to a minimum the time during which the assembly of plutonium was giving out neutrons and radioactive rays. He himself died of radiation sickness nine days later. 24. a. How many men were there in the laboratory at Los Alamos? b. What was Slotin experimenting with on May 12,1946? c. Where was Slotin's earlier work tested? d. Slotin was using, i) an atomic bomb ii) a chain iii) a screwdrive when the accident took place. e. Why did Slotin take the risk that caused the accident? f. What was everyone in the laboratory watching? g. How did everyone know that the chain reaction had begun? h. What happened as a result of the chain reaction? i. There are almost 400 different kinds of sharks. Each kind of shark looks different, has a unique diet, and behaves
differently. There are sharks in the four oceans of the world. Some sharks are longer than a school bus, while others are
so small they can live in fish tanks. Sharks come in all kinds of colors. Most of the time, their skin color helps them blend
in with their surroundings. But, some sharks that live in the deepest part of the ocean actually have parts that glow in the
dark. Most sharks live in salt water, but some can live in fresh water.
Sharks are actually a type of fish. There are some similarities as well as differences between sharks and typical
fish. Shark skeletons are made of cartilage. Fish skeletons are made of bones. Cartilage is the bendy, tough
substance in people's ears and noses. Like other fish, sharks have gills that help them breathe. Unlike fish, people
use lungs to get oxygen from the air. Fish get oxygen from the water using their gills. Water needs to move over the
gills so the sharks can get enough oxygen. To keep the water moving, most sharks need to be swimming in water that
has a very strong current. Sharks have a lot of teeth. Sharks have many rows of teeth, rather than just one row like people.
The teeth from the outside row gradually fall out. Then teeth from the next row take their place. Some sharks will lose
30,000 teeth in a lifetime! Each species of shark has different kinds of teeth and they eat various kinds of food. Some
sharks eat food as small as plankton. Other sharks eat animals as big as sea turtles. Sharks are at the top of the ocean

For more than half a century the world of business and public policy was influenced by 'The father of management." Yet ironically, his entry into management was purely accidental. In his twenties, Drucker had to flee Nazi Germany. When one of these essays was banned by the regime, he began his career in the US Universities teaching politics, economics and philosophy. In 1946, his writings attracted the interest of General motors, America's biggest car company. His portrait of the company "The Concept of the Corporation" became best seller. This was followed by another work "Practice of Management" which combined two schools of management-scientific and humanistic. Drucker's works gained public recognition for two reasons. Je expressed his ideas in simple terms and he integrated different disciplines.
